The Bolyai Scholarship was established specifically to provide financial support for young (initially under 40, from 2002 under 45) talented researchers, as the Regulation states: "to encourage and reward outstanding research and development achievements". The same decree provided that "the scholarship shall be awarded by an independent, professionally and scientifically autonomous Board of Trustees, established by the President of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences within the framework of the public body of the Academy of Sciences, through a public call for applications.
